'EC is a confused institution' - NPP

The EC has denied suspending the 18-member National Election Steering Committee.

According to the Communications Director, Nana Akomea, the EC will put the nation at risk if it continues to be inconsistent in its decision over the composition of the 18-member national election steering committee which has raised concerns among Ghanaians.

A few weeks ago, the EC inaugurated an 18-member national election steering committee but some opposition political parties and some pressure groups raised concerns about the membership of the committee, some of whom were said to be members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The EC after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Friday, agreed to suspend the election committee for broader consultation to take place.

However, the EC has denied suspending the 18-member National Election Steering Committee.

A statement signed by the EC’s acting Director of Public Affairs, Christian Owusu Parry said the report making round in the media is untrue and must be disregarded by the general public.

Mr. Owusu Parry however, said "the committee remains in place until a contrary decision is made."

But Nana Akomea in an interview on Accra-based Top FM said, "Today we don't know whether we have EC steering committee or not, confusion, confusion... The Electoral Commission who is the referee in an election year and with this inconsistency and confusion, it is very very dangerous. It is important that all Ghanaians stand to speak against what is happening."
