Police in Tarkwa Nsuayem in the Western Region have begun a rescue mission to save some miners who are trapped in a mining pit in the area.

Confirming the situation to Citi News, the Tarkwa Divisional Police Commander, ACP Paul Ayittey, stated that three people have been rescued with one person reported dead,

“So far three people have been rescued out of the debris, one is dead and two have been treated and discharged,” he said.

ACP Ayittey further indicated that the operations are ongoing to ascertain whether there are more bodies trapped in the pit,

“There is no indication that there are more people trapped because the eyewitness account showed that there were only three people but the rescue mission is still ongoing and until it is done, we will not be able to confirm the actual number of people that have been trapped,” he added.
