Former Youth and Sports Minister Ayariga was present to witness a tennis championship
Nigerian duo, Michael Moses and Sarah Adegoke finished top of the podium in the one-week tournament that was also competed for by athletes from Burkina Faso, Mali, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin and Ghana of course.
Moses returned home with the top prize of $1,000 (one thousand US Dollars) and an array of souvenirs ranging from footwear to food and drinks from the sponsors after thumping Ghana’s number 2 seed, Wisdom Na-Adjrago 7-5, 6-2 in the men’s final
Adegoke was even more ruthless in seeing off another Ghanaian, Kate Coleman 6-1, 6-0 in the ladies’ final to also win a cash prize of $500 and various items from the sponsors of the regional tournament. Various players from quarter finalists upwards were all rewarded with various cash prizes and souvenirs in the various categories.
“Winning this tournament was my top priority, I did not take the tournament for granted as I approach every tournaments. Before McDan West Africa Open, I won the National Communication Commission championship back home in Nigeria,” Michael Moses told the media after his victory.
Dr. Daniel McKorley, Group Chairman of main sponsors, McDan Shipping and Logistics expressed his satisfaction at the level of competition and commended the players for their output before urging them to work harder for future success.
“We have witnessed 8 days of fantastic competition and it’s a good sign that we are doing something right, we need to produce international champions. I am very happy to be part of McDan West Africa Open,” Dr. McKorley said in his closing remarks.
“This tournament has come to stay and it’s going to be bigger and bigger in the years to come. We are trying to organise two or three more tournaments for the juniors and U-14s as well as club leagues,” the McDan Shipping and Logistics chief added.
The competition which also had support from Rush Energy, AF West Security, West Blue Consults and National Sports Authority (NSA) was graced by former Sports Minister, Mahama Ayariga who commended the organisers for a successful event and called on other corporate bodies to emulate the works of McDan Shipping and Logistics.
