Lionsgate, director apologize for predominant white cast

Amid criticisms for a predominantly white cast in the upcoming film "Gods of Egypt," makers of film have apologized.

Lionsgate and director of the upcoming film "Gods of Egypt," Alex Proyas, have apologised for casting mostly whites in the film.

The movie sparked controversy after the undefinedfeaturing a cast led by Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Brenton Thwaites.

The trailer led to many celebrities and movie watchers demanding for more diversity in casting.

Proyas and Lionsgate have apologised for lack of diversity in casting.

"The process of casting a movie has many complicated variables, but it is clear that our casting choices should have been more diverse. I sincerely apologize to those who are offended by the decisions we made," Proyas said.

"We recognize that it is our responsibility to help ensure that casting decisions reflect the diversity and culture of the time periods portrayed. In this instance we failed to live up to our own standards of sensitivity and diversity, for which we sincerely apologize.

"Lionsgate is deeply committed to making films that reflect the diversity of our audiences. We have, can and will continue to do better," Lionsgate stated.

Following the apology, "Selma" director, Ava DuVernay, took to Twitter on Saturday to call the apology an “unusual occurrence worth noting.

The upcoming 2016 movie stars Butler as an Egyptian god of darkness, Set, who takes over the throne of the Egyptian empire.
