Danielle Brooks plays “Sofia” in Color Purple musical

The actress showed her joy and said with laughter, “When I write in my journal now, I always start with ‘Dear God"

Danielle Brooks who played “Taystee” in Netflix series “Orange is the New Black”, has made her Broadway debut in the musical version of  “The Color Purple” alongside stars like Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo.

Brooks will play the tough Sofia, the role played in the film version by Oprah Winfrey.

The musical takes the form of letters written by Celie to God, also had an influence on her.  “Sofia” is one of the three major female characters in the show, with Hudson on board as nightclub singer Shug and Erivo starring as protagonist Celie, a role she first played in London.

Brooks, 25, a Julliard graduate, has also starred in the animated movie “Angry Birds”.

“I do not have a lot of experience with stage musicals, but I have been singing all my life. “I grew up singing in church as a little girl,” she said.
