Gasmilla’s “Telemo” will not get nomination(s) at Ghana Music Awards, 2016

The dust hasn’t settled on Sarkodie’s controversial “New Guy” collaboration with American rap star, Ace Hood as music analyst and social media commentators keep trying to figure out the concept of the song and why more attention has been given to the song than others.

When the song was released, a lot of juxtapositions have been made with some of Ghana’s current popular songs. Some took it as jokes while others took it as serious business especially Gasmilla’s hit Afrobeat single “Telemo”. To be frank, a lot of music fans chose “Telemo” over “New Guy” because Sarkodie’s Hip-hop song didn’t meet their expectations.

The never ending arguments went on and on and the latest vibe on “Telemo” song is when uncountable number of students of Laterbiokorshie clusters of schools in Accra were captured busily dancing to the song after Empire Entetainment donated to the school.

And if you didn’t know, after that video went viral, entertainment expects have started importuning the yet to be set-up Ghana Music Awards nominations committee to give the song an automatic win as the “Song of the Year”, 2016. One of them is the well-known Happy FM Showbiz Extra’s host Doctar Cann’s producer, Obed Gaze also known as Obee.

After seeing the viral video, he wrote on his Facebook timeline (Unscripted) “Gasmilla have to STOP doing music in Ghana if TELEMO doesn't win the POPULAR SONG OF THE YEAR Award at the VGMAs16. 3 POINTS was a victim tho, I pray TELEMO doesn't become number 2..Tune is fucken popular and U don't need no one to tell U bout it..”

To set the record straight and stop people from launching attacks on Charterhouse, the song is not eligible for next year’s awards ceremony. And here is where the issue of nomination becomes a problem for the self-acclaimed ‘King of Azonto’ Gasmilla.

Per the criteria of Charterhouse, the main organisers of the awards, all songs to be nominated for the awards must fall within the year in review – from January to December. This means, the songs that would be nominated for the 17th edition of Ghana Music Awards should be released between January 1 and December 31, 2015.

According to my records, his street banger “Telemo” which features rapper Capasta was released in August and the visual to it was released in December, 2014 thus, it is disqualified unless the Ghana Music Awards board revise the criteria.

Having said that, Gasmilla deserves applauds for his work. At least, “Telemo” has spread wider than most of his Azonto songs.
