Peter and Paul jumping on the 'Ghana' wave is the only story of their career

Peter and Paul finally have an answer to Mr Eazi, Tekno and Runtown's success.

Psquare are back with a new single.

The twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, have returned with a new song and video titled ‘Away’. The song was released as their first single for 2017. The new single is special, because it tells the story of their career.

The production comes from a place of imitation, just like countless others from the Nigerian space. But this one is peculiar to Psquare because it continues their fine tradition of jumping on every available wave, and making money from it.

Last year, we saw a revolutionary change in the sounds that dominated the Nigerian music space. Thanks to Mr Eazi’s effort at ruling the industry, the success of Tekno’s ‘Pana’, and now Runtown’s ‘Mad over you’, there’s a sonic consistency to them all.

All of these songs have been mid-tempo hits, with elements borrowed from Ghana, and the distinct Alkayida’ snare. It’s all been very consistent, and that has made them blow and achieve acceptance by the mass populace.

In this time while all of this has been happening, Psquare have not paid attention. The twins spent a great part of 2016 fighting over who has the bigger penis. They broke up, sacked their managers, opened new record labels, signed artistes and claimed to be vehemently chasing independent careers.

How cute.

But, the truth finally hit them; they are nothing without each other, and Psquare cannot be replicated by neither Peter alone, nor Paul and his Rudeboy moniker. Peter and Paul are one. They can never be two because they complement each other so well, and when they are apart, it’s half the impact.

After the swift reconciliation, they got back to winning ways with the syrupy ‘Bank alert’, which has gotten almost 24 million views on Youtube.

But they just had to join the Ghana-esque wave. After all, who doesn’t want the ‘Mad over you’ money? Who?

So, cometh the hour, cometh the twins with ‘Away’. This is their perfect answer to Runtown, Tekno and Mr Eazi’s success, and they are ready to get that money. In the video, you could feel the colour schemes of ‘Pana’, the fashion styling of ‘Mad Over You’, mixed with a dose of Peter’s dancing.

To put it simply, Psquare have copied again.

But t’s okay for them to copy. We Nigerians fell in love because they copied. Their entire career has been a career of copying and sampling music from other acts, and they do it so well. Away from when they channeled their inner usher in their careers, their recent releases have all been cases of them recreating all available waves.

When Azonto was trending, Psquare had ‘Alingo’. Shoki became the in-thing, and Psquare answered with ‘Shekini’. While Phyno and Olamide were praising God with ‘Fada fada’, Psquare’s ‘Bank alert’ came to compete.

Copy, and recreate. That’s how they roll and they have been cashing out on it. Only time can tell if ‘Away’ will be as successful as the songs which inspired it. But Psquare did quite a good job with it.

What’s left is for you to love it and share it, so that they can cash out once more.
