Feli Nuna explains why female artistes are struggling

Feli Nuna has attributed the slow progress of female musicians to their low input when it comes to song releases and creating buzz.

Ghanaian female singer and rapper Feli Nuna has weighed in on the ongoing conversation about the slow progress of fellow female musicians in the music industry this year.

The 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards “Unsung” category winner in an interview on Pulse TV on Wednesday, July 25, attributed the slow progress of female musicians to their low input when it comes to song releases and creating buzz.

Feli, whose legal name is Felicia Nuna Akosua Tawiah, also said the industry is male-dominated hence their inability to climb to the top of the charts.

When asked about the partial female dominance in the industry last year as compared to the first half of 2018, she insisted that the industry is male-dominated but admitted that the females need to put in more effort to catch up.

“The problem is we [female musicians] don’t release as many songs as we should. Also, we don’t collaborate as music as we should.

“We have been collaborating and trying, but we are outnumbered by the male musicians. The industry is male-dominated so it’s difficult for us to penetrate," she said.

She continued: "The thing is, we have to be prepared to work as twice as hard to make just half of the impact the males have been making. So, it’s just hard work and there will be an improvement over time."

She also blamed event organisers for booking male artistes more than females.

“Event organisers don’t put female artistes on their shows. They sometimes book females but hype the male artistes more than the females.”
