Maureen Uchenna, a 25-year-old female kidnap suspect who master-minded the abduction of a four-year-old boy, Steve Kanu, in Abeokuta, ogun State, has confessed that she planned the crime with her boyfriend, Obike Amoke, so that he could get the money to pay for her bride price as well as travel abroad, Punch Newspaper reports.

It was gathered that Uchenna alongside Amoke who is now on the run, his brothers, Kenechukwu and Anayo and another accomplice, Oluchi Asadu, kidnapped the boy at his parent's residence at Laderin Estate in Abeokuta and took him to Nsukka, Enugu State where a ransom of N1 million was paid by the father, Dr. Mucipay Kanu, before  the boy was rescued and the suspect arrested.

The main suspect, Uchenna, was a staff nurse in Dr. Kanu’s hospital in Abeokuta for over three years before she resigned in July this year, and therefore had access to the family, something she used to commit the heinous crime.

While being paraded by the Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali at the State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Uchenna confessed her role in the crime.

“I regretted my action, but it was my boyfriend, who wanted to travel abroad and wanted to pay my bride price, that put pressure on me to commit this crime.

I learnt that Doctor paid N1m ransom to one of our members in Abeokuta before the police detectives arrested us in Enugu."

Ali on his part, said the boy was kept for eight days in Anayo Amoke’s residence in Isale Ibefun in Abeokuta, before he was moved to Nsukka, where they kept him in Oluchi Asadu’s house.

He also assured that he would liaise with the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to ensure that Obinna’s house in the village was demolished.
