They lay in the wooden coffins believing the ‘death experience’ would help rid them of misfortune, the Korean Times reported.

Too hot

One of the women reportedly complained that she could not breathe and was too hot, but was persuaded to carry on by the others.

When another woman woke up early on Friday morning, she lifted the lids of the other two coffins to find one woman sleeping and the other dead.

The woman who died was in her 40s but has not yet been formally identified.

Foul play

Her cause of death is yet to be confirmed but there were no signs of foul play, police said.

A police officer told the Korean Times: "It's possible the victim suffocated while sleeping inside the airtight coffin.

"An autopsy will be conducted to find the exact cause of death."
