The Coordinator of the DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said in a  statement on Sunday that the government moved into the matter after a relative of the victim spoke out.

According to her, the team contacted the victim, Mrs. Oridota Oladele, 63, who was described as the breadwinner of her home, to enlighten her on her rights and ascertain what she wanted, Punch reports.

The Coordinator said:

“She told the Director of Citizens’ Rights, Mrs. Omotilewa Ibirogba, that what she required was officials of government to talk to her husband to desist from acts of abuses, which are all crimes contrary to the Prevention Against Domestic Violence Law, 2007.

A referral letter was done to the Isokoko Police Station. Some members of the team also accompanied the victim to the station where the matter was duly reported.

Police officers, in company with DSVRT members, then went to the couple’s residence and invited the husband to the station for questioning.”

The DSVRT coordinator said an undertaking was signed at the station by the victim’s husband that he would desist from domestic violence or risk arrest, while a Protection Order was issued against him.

“The Ministry of Health is working on taking up her treatment free of charge as the victim is in need of medical attention and care,” she added.

Vivour-Adeniyi stated that the Ben Bruce Foundation had also pledged to support the victim, adding that her means of livelihood had been affected by her predicament.
