Girl, 11 gives birth in the hospital after complaining of stomach pain

Reports say neither the 11-year-old girl nor her parents were aware of her pregnancy. Suspicions are however rife that her 14-year-old elder brother could be the father of her baby.

The Independent.co.uk reported that the little girl was rushed to the hospital by her parents after she complained about stomach pain.

It is reported that upon arrival in the hospital, doctors detected that the girl’s condition was far from a mere stomach pain. She was in her late stage of labour and due to give birth in no time.

Reports say the situation was so urgent that the baby had even been born before hospital workers could transfer the mother to the delivery room.

What is more intriguing about the case is the suspicion that the girl’s 14-year-old elder sibling could be the one who impregnated her.

Spain’s health minister, Manuel Villegas expressed shock about the development and said police investigation was underway to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claim.

He said, “We have to wait, there is an ongoing investigation, and when everything is detected and clarified, we will see what happened and if we can help in any way.”

Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER reported that both the girl and her parents have denied knowledge of her pregnancy.

Further reports say the age at which an individual could give consent to sex was amended in 2013 from age 13 to 16, but if an offender is of the same age as the victim or at developing stage, the offence is not punishable.

If this law is anything to go by, then the boy, if found culpable would probably have to be left off the hook.

The case of the 11-year-old girl happens to be the second to a similar one that happened in 2010 in the same country when a 10-year-old girl gave birth in a hospital in Andalusia.
