South African musician, Koyo Bala has passed away at the Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town after battling with anal cancer for 4 years.
The 36-year-old gay musician and socialite was also an HIV positive patient.

During one of his interviews, Bala, best known as a member of defunct gay trio 3Sum revealed that “I went for chemotherapy for six weeks and a radiation programme two years ago, but the cancer came back severely.”
As his situation got worse, he was transferred to Victoria Hospital where he was diagnosed with anal cancer.

"The doctors told me they were surprised [I had the cancer] because it is something that is more prevalent in women,” he explained.
A close friend of the late musician reminisced after his demise that, “Bala always kept a positive outlook and remained strong throughout his illness. “We are devastated and in state of disbelief”.
