Onur Albayrak had signed a contract to be the photographer on July 5th wedding at Turgut Özal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya.

All along, it was only the groom-to-be who had been working on all the arrangements with Onur Albayrak, so he hardly knew the marriage was going to involve a minor.

He said: “The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. She’s a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.”

He then tried to walk away, saying “I can’t take pictures of a child bride,” but the groom-to-be insisted that he was bound by the contract to be the photographer of the event.

According to reports, the altercation turned physical as the angry groom-to-be attacked Onur Albayrak, but being obviously stronger, he reportedly beat up the groom-to-be, breaking his nose in the process.

When news of the incident became viral online, Onur Albayrak resorted to Facebook to respond, saying: “I wish this had never happened, but it did, And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.”

Just as in Ghana, the legal age for marriage in Turkey is 18 years and men who marry girls under that age risk imprisonment.
