The incident is reported to have happened in Assam state, India.
Reuters reports that ATM in question was on the fritz for a few days when technicians were called to inspect it.
However, the technicians opened the machine only to realise that the cash in the ATM has been shredded to pieces by a rat.
Meanwhile, the rat was also found dead and buried within the mountain of minced up money.
Branch manager for the State Bank of India, Chandan Sharma, confirmed the incident in an interview with reporters.
He said steps are being taken to ensure that such a weird case never reoccurs.
“The ATM was out of order for a few days and when our technicians opened the kiosk we were shocked to find shredded notes and a dead rat...We have started an investigation into this rare incident and will take measures to prevent a recurrence,” Sharma said.
The said ATM had a supply of $42,685, but the rat managed to chew $17,662 of the sum.
The report adds that the rat was small enough to evade the ATM's security camera and burrow inside.
Investigators have concluded that there was no foul play after no footage of a rat entering the machine was found after reviewing security cameras.
