According to a Dailymail report, the teenagers have taken to this peculiar habit as it is a cheap and readily accessible source of stimulant.

The Indonesian National Drug Agency (BNN) is reported as saying the chemicals in the sanitary pads give those who drink the resulting concoction a feeling of 'flying' and hallucinations.

Straits Times also reported of police in the island of Java, home to the capital Jakarta having arrested several youth who subsequently revealed that they had taken the bizarre concoction which got them intoxicated.

A senior Commander Suprinarto, head of the BNN in Central Java is quoted as saying “The used pads they took from the trash were put in boiling water. After it cooled down, they drank it together.”

Local media reported a 14-year-old boy from Belitung Island who admitted to drinking the sanitary pad concoction as saying, the pad is put in water and boiled for about an hour after which the pad is squeezed and the water left to cool down for drinking.

The unnamed youngster further revealed in an interview with Post Belitung that, although the concoction is bitter, his friends drink it trice a day: morning, afternoon and evening.

The Indonesian ministry of health is reportedly investigating to figure out what chemical component of the sanitary pads is getting the youth intoxicated, for which reason drinking its tea has become the new trend.

What is clear from the reports so far is that the use of all other hard drugs are illegal and the youth have been trying to outsmart the authorities by still getting high without breaching any law of the land.

It is however baffling whether they are concerned about the health implications of the practice as they reportedly use both used and new pads for the concoction.
