I am not under pressure – Foster Romanus

A section of the public have said that there is the likelihood of Romanus being under pressure to deliver in order to ensure that Ghanaian comedians are given the opportunity in subsequent shows to perform.

Foster Romanus in his elements

Ahead of the 20th edition of the longest running comedy series in Ghana, a Night of 1020 Laughs and Music, comedian Foster Romanus who is billed to perform says he is not under pressure.

Last year’s edition which featured some of the leading comedians from Nigeria saw Ghana’s own Derrick Kobina Bonney (DKB) put up what many have described as an ‘awesome’ performance that seemed to have silenced critics and proven that Ghanaian comedy is still alive.

But speaking to Abrantepa on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, , Foster Romanus debunked the assertion.

“It feels good to be recognised and be put on such a platform. Little pressure here and there but it’s not one that we cannot handle. DKB was on it and because he put up a dazzling performance, people expect me to do better. I’m preparing very hard and I hope to excel even better than he did.

“I am not under pressure because this is not the first time I am doing comedy. I have been doing this for so many years. There is this kind of feeling that comes when you have something big ahead of you but I won’t consider that as being under pressure,” he said.

Romanus added that he is not intimidated by the Nigerian comedians who will share the stage with him on the night.

“I’m going there to have fun, I do not see it as a competition. They are good but I don’t see them as bigger than me. Once I am on the same stage with them, it shows that I have the guts and what it takes to rock shoulders with them. They don’t intimidate me in any way. I am David, they are Goliath,”

Asked what people should expect on the night, Romanus humorously said, “They should come and have fun. They should come with ribs and not pens, pencils and books to mark. It is a show; not a classroom. They should just come and support Foster Romanus.”
