Zurak Cancer Foundation is a youth non-governmental organization educating individuals about cancer, creating awareness, supporting cancer patients and advocating for cancer in Ghana. Cancer is an emerging public health problem in Africa. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), about 715,000 cancer cases and 542,000 cancer deaths occurred in 2008. These numbers are projected to nearly double to 1.28 million cancer cases and 970,000 cancer death by 2030 simply due to the aging and growth of the population.

Moreover, these numbers are expected to be higher due to the adoption of lifestyles related to socio-economic development such as smoking, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. Despite these growing burden, cancer continuous to receive low health priority in Africa due to lack of resources and other pressing public health issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

In Africa, Zurak Cancer Foundation is tackling cancer related to infectious agents such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is the main causative virus for anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancers, vaginal cancers, vulvar cancers, penile cancers and cervical cancer.

January is the awareness month for cervical cancer so therefore, Zurak Cancer Foundation is organizing a Cervical Health Awareness Program to educate the youth concerning the risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer. Moreover, this is initiative is also targeted to raise awareness regarding the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

The event is set to take place at Sheikh Yunus Mosque/Zongo Central Mosque (Madina-Zongo) from 9AM to 11 AM on Saturday, 30January, 2016. The event is set to bring the youth in various schools at Madina. This event is targeted to encourage the youth to foster healthy lifestyles and also guard themselves against the disease.
