Rihanna has spoken about how she decided to get back together with rapper Chris Brown after he assaulted her because she thought she could change him.

The 27-year-old acknowledged she and the rapper, 26, don't have much of a relationship now but her feelings for him remain.

''I don’t hate him. I will care about him until the day I die,'' she told the magazine.

Even though she's constantly linked with other guys, Rihanna said the Loyalty hitmaker remains her 'last real boyfriend.'

Brown attacked her inside his Lamborghini the night before the 2009 Grammys and photos of her bruised and swollen face were subsequently leaked to the website TMZ.

She said that she blamed herself as much as him for rekindling their romance in late 2012.

In 2013, she asked a judge to lift a restraining order put in place by the court.

Rihanna said she felt like she could be Brown's 'guardian angel' and he just needed 'someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing.'

But in the end, she said, she was a reminder to him of what he had done and what had happened and she realized that her willingness to put up with his behavior meant he would never really respect her.

''Sometimes you just have to walk away,'' the Diamonds performer told Vanity Fair.

As far as her love life goes these days, Rihanna insisted in the interview that she is reluctant to date.

The pressure of paparazzi and the rumors that swirl whenever she's pictured with someone make it very difficult, she explained.

''I’ve had to be so conscious about people what they say and why people want to be with me, why people want to sleep with me…. It makes me very guarded and protective. I learned the hard way,'' she said.
