The plans were announced by the Cecelia Dapaah, the Minister of Aviation while on a working tour of region. According to Cecelia Dapaah, the airstrip was needed to open up the region to business and tourism opportunities.

“We need to do an airstrip in Bolgatanga to facilitate easy movement from around the country to Bolgatanga for business activities and tourist attractions. So we are assessing the proposed site in Sherigu, a suburb of Bolgatanga for the technical men from the Ministry of Aviation to come to do the assessment of the construction of the airstrip and subsequently an Airport.”

Plans to build an airport in a different suburb of Bolgatanga began as far back as 1995 but the project was abandoned and successive governments have failed to finish the project. As such many would be why resources for this new project would not be used to complete the old project.

A journalist with Accra-based Citi FM reports that "the site has now become a grazing ground for cattle, with the cleared trees re-surfacing. The road leading to the proposed the site has also developed cracks with culverts broken."
