Aviation Authority hints possible international flight cancellation

This is in the wake of massive cancellations on the domestic travel front, where domestic flights from Accra to Kumasi and other parts of the country were cancelled.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority says international flights to Accra could be cancelled and subsequent ones suspended if dusty weather conditions associated to hamattan continues.

Simon Allotey, director of the Civil Aviation Authority says the arrangement will continue until the weather situation improves.

Meanwhile, the Aviation Authority has installed landing equipment that will facilitate easier landing at the country's domestic airports under prevailing weather conditions.

An instrument landing system provides precision lateral and vertical guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing.

“We just completed installation of one unit at Kumasi [airport] but it has to go through calibration to properly get the instrument working,” Simon Allotey said.

He said although the GCAA is proactively taking steps to improve safety at airports across the country as the dusty Harmattan persist, flights to Accra from abroad could be suspended.

Meanwhile Ghana Meteorological Agency, says the current weather conditions could get worse in the coming days.

The Agency has predicted December 13 as a possible date for ease in Harmattan conditions.

The cold, dry and dusty Harmattan wind engulfs the West African subcontinent from the Sahara Desert into the Gulf of Guinea between the end of November and the middle of March.
