Crying rooms are now a thing in Japan

Japan has given us a lot of things over the years; karaoke, emoji, anime, Nintendo and many others. The latest offering Japan has for the world is one you would not expect and maybe even find weird – Crying rooms.

Apparently, this is a new thing in Japan. According to The Telegraph, the Mitsui Garden Yotsuya hotel in Tokyo now offers women special “crying rooms” to help them fight stress.

Available from about $85, through August 31, the rooms contain tissues, warm sheets and eye masks. Women can even watch tear-inducing movies like Forrest Gump or read super-sad manga.

In a manner of speaking, the idea is quite a genius one. Sometimes, there is nothing better than a good cry, psychologically speaking – away from home, work and people you don’t want witnessing you in that moment.

A lot of people might take offense that the rooms are only for women, although this is Japan we are talking about – cultural ideas around gender are very different from almost every other part of the world.

The crying rooms join the list of ‘weird’ things that have come out of Japan. Tokyo is packed with “love hotels” – rooms designed for people to use for short stays when they are feeling amorous. Over 1.4 million couples reportedly visit a love hotel each day.

“Cuddle cafes” – where men pay to sleep beside a girl is another thing. They don’t get to have sex with the girl, but can pay extra to stare in her eyes or stroke her hair. (Creepy, yes?)

One might easily dismiss a crying room as something silly or even pathetic. But studies show that adult workers are under more stress than ever before and this true the world over.

Crying is commonly seen as a form of weakness, but evolutionary biologists have conducted studies that show that crying has emotional benefits.
