When your boyfriend wants to be ‘best friends’ with your best friend

What I am trying to say is, it is not because of the fact that Adjo will ‘snatch’ you from me that I don’t want you to have her number. That girl doesn’t have enough strength in her thin arms to snatch anything even if she wanted to.

Letter to Boyfriend

One thing I learned about Adjo is that I can’t trust her with you. I wish I didn’t know that about her, but I do. So no you can’t have her number, at least I wouldn’t be the one to give it to you.

Kwesi, I remember very clearly the day you swore on your favourite comic book that you will have no eye for any other woman but yours truly. I believe that vow, even though it was on that ridiculous comic book. Wait, now that I think about it, did you choose to swear on your comic book to convey to me the message that you were joking, and that you didn’t mean a thing you said? Remind me to have you swear again on your bible next time I see you.

Even before your vow, I had decided to live without the fear that you would be unfaithful. Life is hard enough, luv, and obsessing about things I have little control over will drive me to my grave faster than I want.  What I am trying to say is, it is not because of the fact that Adjo will ‘snatch’ you from me that I don’t want you to have her number. That girl doesn’t have enough strength in her thin arms to snatch anything even if she wanted to.  I don’t want you to have her number because she is too much of my friend; she knows all my secrets and you getting to know her will be nothing but a bad idea.  One day, you will call her on the phone and ask to hang out and have some drinks; just like friends do. And that will be the day she tells you all the crazy stuff she and I have done. Adjo just can’t hold her alcohol!

Kwesi, it isn’t that there are things I plan to hide from you. I just know that love must be shipped in bits and bits, not gulped down whole like bitter herbs. Every day I find out something new about you, it is like magic renewed, and I don’t want anything to take this away from us. So can you not take Adjo’s number, please?  Let’s just keep the magic alive as best as we can.

Yours till life says no,

Eno
