The rapper and the President-elect show off their special shake after a surprise meeting
In a surprise, Internet-breaking meeting between two of 2016’s most polarizing figures, rapper Kanye West showed up to hang with President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower in New York City Tuesday morning.
Details about the meeting are still scarce, and we won’t pretend to speculate about what the two men talked about. (Actually, yes we will: Is Yeezy angling for Secretary of the Interior? What’s Trump’s favorite guest verse on The Life of Pablo? Is it Ty Dolla $ign’s spot on “Real Friends”? Important questions.)
Last month, West made headlines for saying he would’ve voted for Trump—that is, if he actually voted at all—shortly before entering the hospital for exhaustion. And in video captured by CNN after the surprise powwow, Trump proclaimed that he and West “have been friends for a long time,” and that they simply discussed “life.”
Politics aside, we couldn’t help but notice the weird handshake that Trump and West share in the video. After a harmless enough hug-shake hybrid, the two men pull back and lock hands for what seems like an interminable amount of time, as if they’re about to arm wrestle.
Let’s see it in gif form:
Trump may soon be the leader of the free world, and West is one of music’s biggest icons, but neither guy knows how to pull off a proper handshake. Here’s the correct form:
Start early. When you’re 6 feet away, hold out your hand and tilt your fingers down.
Go in for the kill. Step forward with a confident handshake, scooping your palm into the other person’s palm.
Adjust on the fly. Don’t pull away if your partner is going in for a bone-crusher. Subtly force him to adjust his grip, then release after a firm, comfortable shake.
We look forward to seeing the two men shake again on the debate stage in 2020.
