Stranger Things Star David Harbour Says Hopper 'Needed to Die'

Stranger Things’ Harbour: Hopper 'Needed to Die'
  • At German Comic Con, Stranger Things actor David Harbour addressed fan questions about Hopper's return for season 4.
  • He admitted to being equally in the dark about his character's fate.
  • Harbour also admitted that Hopper "needed to die."

Stranger Things actor David Harbour appeared at German Comic Con Dortmund last weekend, where he addressed fans screaming the only question that matters in Hawkins, Indiana: will police chief Jim Hopper be back for season 4 ?

Harbour played coy , telling the audience that he wished he knew and that show creators Matt and Ross Duffer (known collectively as The Duffer Brothers) wont tell me anything, so well have to see.

The last time Hopper was in one piece, he and Joyce (Winona Ryder) had infiltrated a Russian base, trying to stop Soviet scientists from re-opening the gate to the Upside Downthat sticky, alternate reality confusingly overlaid onto our own reality, because metaphysics be damned.

In a fight scene, one part Terminator, two parts Die Hard (and three parts totally unnecessary), Hopper wrestles with a Russian guard before tossing him into a giant moving gearthat guy's definitely dead. Within a few moments, it would seem that Hopper was incinerated, too, but we never do see a body.

I feel like, in a sense, that character needed to die. He needed to make some sacrifice to make up for the way hes been living for the past like 10 years, the resentments that hes had.

Fans were torn with Hoppers third season depiction, which seemed more toxic than wholesome. Harbour agreed. I think Hopperfrom the very beginning Ive said thishes very lovable in a certain way, but also, hes kind of a rough guy, Harbour explained in Germany. I feel like, in a sense, that character needed to die. He needed to make some sacrifice to make up for the way hes been living for the past like 10 years, the resentments that hes had.

Still, Harbour doesn't seem done with Hopper, and from what we saw at the end of last season, the Duffer brothers also want us itching for resurrection. In the post-credits scene after Hoppers death, we see Gulag guards talking about the American being held captive. Many assume that this American is Hopper, transported somehow out of Indiana instead of incinerated. Harbour said he cant confirm this, but he was equally optimistic.

When asked if he hoped Hopper survived, Harbour joked, Guess what? Me too. Because I like working.
