These 'Mindhunter' Images Offer Some Chilling Clues About Season 2

The second season of Mindhunter hasn't even dropped yet and already it's ratcheting up the tension. It's been almost two years since David Fincher's gripping drama about a team of criminal profilers first came to Netflix, and the streaming giant just released a slew of new images ahead of season two's premiere on August 16.

Viewers will remember that the first season of Mindhunter ended with special agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) collapsing from an anxiety attack after immersing himself in the dark inner world of serial killer Ed Kemper. One of the new stills from season two shows Ford hospitalized: as the new episodes are reported to take place a few years later, could this be a sign of a deteriorating mental state like that of Will Graham in Hannibal?

Fincher has disclosed that season two will include the real-life Atlanta child murders. "We could probably have done 3 seasons on the Atlanta child murders," he said. "Its a huge and sweeping and tragic story." Several of the new images show glimpses of Ford and his partner Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) interviewing families and what looks like Wayne Williams, the man who claimed to be innocent but was ultimately convicted of the crimes.

The season two photos also tease a romantic subplot for Anna Torv's character, psychology professor Wendy Carr. It was revealed that the first season that Carr is a lesbian, but remains closeted due to the prejudices of the show's 1970s setting, and it looks like viewers will be getting greater insight into her private life in season two.

And in one of the most chilling of the new photos, the team come face to face with notorious killer Charles Manson, played by Damon Herriman for the second time this year: he also appears as Manson in Quentin Tarantino's new movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood .

The second season of Mindhunter promises to be even darker than the first, so it might not be one for binging when all eight episodes drop on August 16. If you do end up mainlining the whole story over a weekend, make sure you've got a wholesome activity scheduled for when you finish.
