Apple plan to rival other streaming platforms including Spotify and Jay Z's Tidal

Although Apple’s current product line is pretty what we all know and expect, it wasn’t always so.

In the past, Apple had no problems with rolling out a new product and then shelving it a few years later. But that was when the company was much younger and riskier.

Here are 13 Apple products that the company used to make but are no longer with us today for one reason or the other:

1. Apple Gold EarPods (2013): As a means of benefitting Bono’sProduct (RED) charity, Jony Ive and Marc Newson designed a limited edition pair of 18k solid rose gold EarPods. They were auctioned for $461,00.

2. iPod HiFi (2006-2007): This was an attempt by Apple to make a speaker for the iPod. It was originally retailing for $349 before it was quickly phased out and Apple started recommending third-party systems instead.

3. Apple eMac (2002-2006): If you went to school in the US in the 2000s, you most likely used an eMac. It was originally designed as an education-only version of the iMac but it never caught on and eventually became only a cheaper version of the iMac. The first version came with 128MB of memory, a 40GB hard drive, and ran Mac OS X Puma.

4. Apple Flower Power iMac (2002): Hard to believe but this is actually a real version of the iMac that Apple released after it had already created iMacs in every other color in the rainbow. Needless to say, the limited edition “Flower Power” computer wasn’t so popular.

5. Apple Pippin (1995-1997): Weird but Apple did make a sort-of video game type thing. The Apple Pippin was a multimedia platform based on the Macintosh OS. It originally meant to be open standard but the company eventually partnered with Bandai to create a game console based on the platform. The Pippin sold only 40,000 units and was quickly killed.

6. Apple Quicktake Camera (1994-1997): Yes, Apple was once in the camera business. The Quicktake was one of the earliest consumer digital cameras, and was built for Apple by a combination of Kodak and Fujifilm. It retailed for $749, the first camera came with a resolution of .3 megapixels, and came with 1MB of flash storage.

7. Apple PowerCD (1993-1996): This was actually a product designed by Phillips and just banded with an Apple logo. When connected to a Mac, the device could read data disks, and traditional CDs when connected to speakers.

8. Apple Newton (1993-1998): The Apple Newton was a personal assistant OS designed for Apple’s MessagePad tablets. The device shipped with apps like Notes, Names, and dates. All versions also came with a stylus and handwriting recognition software. Although it was financially unsuccessful, the Apple Newton helped paved the way for devices like the iPhone and iPad.

9. Apple Scanner (1988-1997): Maintaining the trend of making its own peripheral devices for the Macintosh, Apple launched a 300 dpi, A4 scanner in 1988. Both the product and its replacement, the Apple OneScanner, never really took off so Apple stopped selling it in 1997.

10. The Apple Collection (1986): Yes, this also happened. Apple once had a fashion line. The Apple Collection was the company’s attempt to sell clothing. The collection featured 80s style baggy sweatchirts, rainbow caps and visors layered with the Apple logo.

11. MacWrite (1984-1994): In 1984, Apple released MacWrite, a word processing application for the original Macintosh. It was one of the first ever WYSIWYG editors available and eventually evolved into MacWrite Pro, AppleWorks, and now Pages.

12. The Apple Printer (1979-1988): In the early days of computers, most companies had to make their own printers. In 1979, Apple introduced the Silentype, a thermal printer retailing for $599 which is about $2,000 in today’s dollars. The company later got out of the printer business after it released the LaserWriter in 1985 with a mighty $6,995 (about $15,000 today) price tag.

13. Game Tapes for the Apple II (1978): Before the time of floppy disks, Apple computers ran software off of cassettes. It had games like Slot Machine, Star Wars, and Lemonade Stand.
