10 ways to check the health of your relationship

Does your relationship present an environment where you feel comfortable to tell your partner about things that make you feel vulnerable?

 

“Relationships that work are the ones that are worked on,” says Barton Goldsmith Ph.D.  Healthy relationships must be characterised by respect, open sharing of information and a building of trust. The relationship must be based on the need to share thoughts, feelings and needs as the best way to build intimacy.

Here are 10 questions to help you know whether you are in a healthy relationship:

1. Is your partner open enough that you can name their best friends and identify some of their positive qualities?

2.Does your partner embody ideals that make you want to become more like them or at least in some ways?

3.Does you relational environment provide an opportunity for growth, disagreement, where you can be acknowledged even when your point doesn’t make sense?

4.Can you tell your partner’s aspirations/dreams in life, challenges, fears and concerns?

5. Can your partner respect your decision even when it does not align with his/hers?

6. Is your partner concerned about pushing their own agenda even if it means compromising your set values?

7. Does your relationship present an environment where you feel comfortable to tell your partner about things that make you feel vulnerable?

8. Are there more positive than there are negative traits/qualities that would be passed to your children if the two of you were to get married and have children together?

9. Do you feel like you partner supports your personal goals/dreams, even when they look so different from theirs?

10. Do you feel a sense of security and confidence when around your partner or even when you are a part? Does distance increase your feelings of insecurity?
