Meet Eyram Tawia

TEDxAccra 2015 will take place on April 11 at the National Theatre from 7am to 7pm. It is expected to be the biggest TEDx event in Ghana to date. The theme for this year is “The Next Chapter”.

Eyram is one of the very few African game developers who is convinced Africa will make a salient contribution to the world of game development. Eyram’s love for comics and computer games helped to spur his interest to learn to program back in junior high school. He wanted to make the comics he drew as a youngster, come to life on the computer screen. He’s the cofounder of Leti Arts, which aims at bringing African history and storytelling to a new global audience via games, comics and African-themed interactive content. Eyram’s work has received many reviews and awards, including speaking at GDC 2013, and participating at US-Africa Business Summit 2014. Eyram strives to make games that compete globally using local expertise. Not only is he starting a company in Africa, he is starting a whole new industry in Africa.

Why you should listen to his talk:

The vacuum created in African entertainment is the Game development industry which when filled will immensely contribute to our GDP as a continent. In the US and UK, the gaming industry is bigger than the music and the movie industry combined. This really shows how much Africa is missing. My talk is going to expose what has transpired so far in the African game development industry and my journey so far. You will have fun understanding how Leti Arts travelled this journey and especially why African history and folklore needs 21 century interpretation. Leti Arts’ efforts to represent Africa’s ancient and modern heroes are both refreshing and relevant, as it signals that African culture can survive the digital age.
