2014 was the year of the World Cup, the ECOWAS summit in Ghana as well as Ghanaians having public discourse on the 2015 elections. To mark the end of the year, we’ve delved into our data to create our annual ‘Year on Twitter’ roundup. You can relive some of the most influential moments and popular Tweets from around the world on 2014.twitter.com.

In 2014, Twitter acted as a real-time soundtrack to the biggest moments and events as they unfolded in the world.  Whether it was the World Cup final, what happened in the world was simultaneously happening on Twitter. We looked at the top events that created the biggest spikes in Ghana Twitter traffic in 2014. The results reveal Ghana to be a nation of sporting fans.

Ghana’s top moments this year were centered around the FIFA World Cup with the Black Stars putting in a fight to win the Cup, while holding the mantle for Africa.  Standing out was the Ghana Vs Germany match that saw Ghana settle for a 2-2 draw. Ghana’s performance against the football powerhouse Germany was lauded by all its supporters at home and across Africa. Ghana was also among the few African teams that almost went to the semi-finals and fans went to Twitter to show their support and Tweet about the scores and their favourite players.

There were more than 672 million Tweets globally during the World Cup. Most Tweets from Ghana were centered around the two matches which generated conversations all over Africa. This is due to the fact that the Black Stars have been a strong contending team during the world cup games over the years.
