How to build a cordial relationship in the workplace

You will stand out from the pack, if you apply these simple tips.

Workplace

The workplace brings together different people from diverse backgrounds. There is a tendency for people to misunderstand each other.

1. Respect other people’s time: Do not take too much of people’s time. Before engaging your colleagues, let them know how long it will take, and keep to the time stated. Always ask for their consent.

2. Respect other people’s space: People hold their work space sacred. If you are in their space, do not touch stuff and if you do, put them back properly. Always give enough personal space, when you are talking with someone.

3. Always mention their names correctly: People generally love anyone that makes an effort to know their names, remember it always, and pronounce it correctly. To be on your colleague’s top list. Get their names right always.

4. Always wear a smile while talking: A smile always diffuses tension. Your kind smile can ease stress for someone.

5. Listen carefully: A good listener will be the most sought after. Do not be hasty to make your opinions felt. Simply paying attention to someone will take you a notch higher.

6. Show concern: Find time to get to know your colleagues concerns. Not in a busy-body way though. Trust has to be built before people can open up to you.

7. Avoid arguments: Never strive to win the fight. You will surely lose the relationship. The euphoria from winning the fight, soon fades, but the bond from winning a relationship lasts more.

8. Do not involve yourself in office politics and gossip: This has a way of coming back to haunt you. You lose credence and trust when you involve yourself in such petty stuff.

11. Communicate in short, simple to understand sentences: Effective communication is key to successful relationship building.
