Tom Lewis was made to rue a late collapse as he missed out on posting the European Tour's first official sub-60 round on Thursday, shooting a nine-under 62 on day one of the Made in Denmark.

Englishman Lewis, whose career has struggled to live up to its early promise after bursting onto the scene as an amateur at the 2011 Open Championship, started at the 10th and was 12 under after 13.

Despite narrowly missing an opportunity to make the turn in 27, Lewis initially carried forward his momentum and moved to 12 under with a stunning eagle putt on hole four.

Lewis found the rough at the next hole and cruelly dropped a shot when he horseshoed his par putt - the first blemish on an otherwise faultless scorecard.

The 25-year-old parred six and seven, negotiating his way out of a bunker on the latter, but was unable to repeat the trick at eight as he missed a relatively straightforward putt after overcoming another sand hazard.

Lewis cut a dejected figure as hopes of history slipped away, and another bogey at the last saw him drop back to share the lead with Joakim Lagergren and Thomas Pieters - albeit equalling the course record of 62.

The trio sit a shot clear of Wales' Bradley Dredge, himself two ahead of a three-man chasing pack featuring David Lipsky, Jake Roos and Scott Jamieson, who was the last man to hit 60 on the European Tour and made the third albatross of the year at hole four.

Robert Karlsson aced 16 but sits seven shots off the lead at two under, while Andy Sullivan hit a rare birdie-and bogey-free par round.
