Joao De Lucca leads Brazil in Toronto gold rush

Brazil had a strong night in the pool at the Pan American Games, largely thanks to Joao De Lucca.

Brazil's Joao De Lucca led his nation in the pool on Wednesday, collecting his second and third gold medals of the Pan American Games.

De Lucca broke the Games record on his way to winning the men's 200 metre freestyle in one minute and 46.42 seconds in Toronto - before being a part of the 4x200m team that also set an event-record time of 7:11.15.

The 25-year-old's wins saw him add to his gold medal triumph in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Tuesday.

Thiago Simon also stopped the clock in a Games record in the men's 200m breaststroke (2:09.82) in another triumph for Brazil.

Canada's Kierra Smith and Hilary Caldwell were other record-breakers in the women's 200m breaststroke and backstroke finals respectively - Smith breaking the benchmark in her heat, before going even better in the final in a time of 2:24.38.

Sean Lehane was the only gold medallist not to break a Games record in the final as he won the men's 200m backstroke in 1:57.47, but he did manage to touch the wall in a Games-best 1:57.11 earlier in the day in his heat.

American Allison Schmitt won the women's 200m freestyle in 1:56.23, the first Games record of the night session.

Argentina collected two gold medals in the tennis, with Facundo Bagnis claiming the men's singles event with a win over Colombian Nicolas Barrientos in the final 6-1 6-2.

Bagnis' compatriots Guido Andreozzi and Maria Irigoyen combined to win the mixed doubles final 6-3 6-0 over Canadian duo Philip Bester and Gaby Dabrowski.

Andreozzi and Bagnis could not combine for a clean sweep of the men's events, however, losing the doubles final in straight sets to Chilean pair Nicolas Jarry and Hans Podlipnik 6-4 7-6.

United States edged Brazil 11-9 in the men's water polo final, while the Americans also swept the two badminton golds on offer on Wednesday - the men's and women's doubles - with respective victories over Brazilian pairings.
