Serena Williams gets past Venus at US Open as Grand Slam bid stays alive

Serena Williams overcame sister Venus in three sets in the US Open quarter-finals to move to within two wins of a calendar Grand Slam.

In the 27th meeting between the famous siblings, world number one Serena came away a 6-2 1-6 6-3 victor at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

For Serena, it was her 16th win in the friendly rivalry as she continues her bid to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete the Slam.

Serena has won 33 straight matches in grand slams, with her last loss at a major coming at Wimbledon in 2014, and she will face Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals.

The loss ended Venus' best run at Flushing Meadows since 2010, when she reached the semis.

With 28 grand slams between them, Serena and Venus put on a fine display, albeit with mostly short points as neither wanted to be drawn into long exchanges.

Serena was under close-to-no pressure on serve early in the first set and it showed as she broke for 3-2.

She broke again in the seventh game, creating a break point with a drop shot followed by a wonderful lob.

Venus sent a ball long and suddenly found herself 5-2 down, with Serena holding to love to take the set.

That put Serena in control as, heading into this clash, the 33-year-old held a 78-1 win-loss record after winning the first set at the US Open.

It was Venus' turn to dominate on serve in the second, allowing her sister to win just five return points.

Venus broke for 3-1 and then 5-1 on her way to levelling the match, seeing the pair go to a third and deciding set for the 10th time.

Serena pushed ahead in the second game by breaking to 15 and she consolidated for 3-0 despite facing a break point.

Venus forced Serena to serve it out, only to overplay in the ninth game and set up two match points for the younger Williams.

Serena only needed one, an ace out wide seeing her close out victory before the pair hugged at the net.
