Montie FM apology statement 'hypocritical' - Ayikoi Otoo

Management of Accra-based station, Montie FM has apologised to the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court for allowing its airwaves to be used by two radio panellists to threaten the lives of justices of the court.

According to him, the station should have known beforehand that such an attitude could constitute contempt of court.

“They have been doing these things. I’m surprised that they watched that these things continued over the years. Only now that they have gone to touch the neck of the elephant and now they are under pressure and they are now telling us they really are sorry,” Ayikoi Otoo told Accra-based TV3.

He believed that the alleged threats on the judges by the two panelists do not make sense considering they had no direct qualms with the judiciary.

The former Attorney General added that even though the station had taken the appropriate decision to apologise, “they have already been charged with offences and ordered to appear to show court why they should not be sent to the prison.”

Background

The Supreme Court on Tuesday cited owners of Montie fm, the two panelists and the host of the daily political show for contempt.

The judges subsequently issued a warrant for them to appear before them and answer to the charge of contempt.

This was after two political commentators; Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn appeared the radio station and tried to incite people against the Supreme Court judges for their judgment on the Voters’ register.
