These inspiring young students are building the future of Ghana's economy through their startups.
It’s quite surprising and inspiring to find that at the heart of some of the popular brands are students who have to combine the challenge of pursing academic excellence and their private startups.
Here is a list of five student entrepreneurs at the peak of the startup ladder.
1. Selby Winifred || Afrocentric Bamboo Limited || UPSA
Winnifred Selby, who likes to be known as Winnie, was just 17 years old when she co-founded Afrocentric Bamboo, a company that manufactures and markets bicycles made from bamboo. Afrocentric Bamboo bikes are sturdy, affordable – US$100 for the local market – and made for the high terrain and rough roads of rural Ghana. She has received international recognition from Forbes and Elle and has hosted a TED talk with TEDx Accra.
2. Bright Aferi || Hill Bill Shoes || UG
Hill Bill Shoes is proudly a Ghanaian based shoe company which manufactures shoes primarily for men owned by a final year student Chemistry student of the University of Ghana. Following Bright’s love for fashion and peculiar interest in shoes, he took advantage of a gap in the market and is on his way to becoming the best shoe brand in Ghana.
3. Sam Morman Sali || Sesa Mu || Ashesi
Dalai Ma Fellow, Sam Sali won $10,000 in project funding to implement his agricultural development project, the Sesa Mu Farmers Initiative. Sesa Mu has already trained hundreds of farmers and are ultimately working hard to make farming in Berekuso, and Ghana, a much more attractive business.
4. Anum Henry Akwetey || Beautiful Minds Publication || KNUST
Beautiful Minds Publication is soaring high as perhaps the most successful student owned book publication company. It has already published books for Kindergarten and lower primary students used by many schools in the country.
