Deputy General Secretary of PUWU, Michael Nyantakyi, said the recent hike in energy bills is designed toward making ECG attractive for the private investor.

He further warned that the hikes have not gotten to the level where the private investor finds it attractive to invest in.

“Concession has been in Uganda for a while and the people are crying over the high tariff they are paying,” Nyantakyi told Joy FM.

The tariff which is going to go so high will make it difficult for Ghanaians.

“You see, currently this are all preparatory to make sure that the private investor will see the tariff as something good to come in.

“It means we haven’t even gotten to the level where private sector will find it very comfortable.

“If now we are crying, when the concessionaire comes in the tariff are going to be more than high,” he said.

Government is set to lease ECG to a private company for 25 years as part of the second compact of the Millennium Challenge Account signed by the Government in August 2014.

The concession has come under intense opposition from the workers, expressing fears they may lose their jobs.

In a related development, EGC is engaging in massive disconnection of power to institutions and company due to unpaid huge sums of money.
