Ghana Cedi New GH¢5 note in circulation

The GH¢5 cedi note will have additional security features that are sensitive to touch to enable the visually impaired identify it.

The Bank of Ghana today 7 March, 2017, put into circulation new GH¢5 Ghana note with new security features and design.

The note has new durable security features which can be easily identified by the public, while other internationally acceptable security features which are sensitive to touch to aid the visually challenged in identifying the currency have been introduced, according to the central bank.

The GH¢5 cedi note will have additional security features that are sensitive to touch to enable the visually impaired identify it.

The new note features an engraved portrait of Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey, a missionary and a teacher in the Gold Coast, who lived from October 18, 1875, to July 30, 1927. Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey contributed immensely to education to the then Gold Coast.

Existing denominations of the Ghana cedi in circulation are (Notes): GH¢50, GH¢20, GH¢10,  GH¢5, GH¢2 and GH¢1.

Coins: GH¢1, 50Gp, 20Gp, 10Gp,  5Gp and 1Gp.

Dr  Aggrey was born on October 18, 1875, and died on July 30, 1927. As a philosopher, missionary, intellectual and teacher, he is credited for being one of the advocates of education in the then Gold Coast.

His quotes, such as "If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation.

"The surest way to keep a people down is to educate the men and neglect the women. If you educate a man you simply educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a family," have become symbols of his personality.

Addressing the press, the Governor of the BoG, Dr Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, explained that the central bank decided to use the portrait of an eminent personality who contributed immensely towards education and the development of the country.

The currency will be used alongside the old GHc 5 note.
