22 days after the Ghana Veterinary Medical Technicians’ Association(VEMTAG) declared a strike to protest a 5 year delay in payments in market premium payments , the Trades Union Congress has announced a suspension of the action.

The stand off  led to a declaration of strike by the association which persisted since January 26, 2016. There are concerns the strategic role of members of the association will compromise general health delivery and surveillance chain , not only for animals but especially animal to human diseases such as Ebola and Avian Influenza(Bird flu).

According to a press statement signed by the secretary general of the trades union congress(TUC) Kofi Asamoah , the members of the association appreciate the “high risk associated with the situation for members of the general public as long as they remain on strike.”

The TUC says it has intervened and is ,” pleading with members of VEMTAG to resume work while it works with the others within the Public Services Joint Standing Negotiating Committee to engage the appropriate Institutions to bring the matter to a close.”

The TUC is also cautioning the directorate of the ministry of agriculture responsible for veterinary services to be circumspect and not to take away steps that would further disturb attempts to amicably resolve the situation.
