The Ghana Revenue Authority Medium tax payers’ office in Agbogbloshie says 75% of traders within the medium tax bracket have failed to file their tax returns.

“In 2015 we expected 1212 to file their taxes, only 303 people have filed . This represents only 25," Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Medium Tax Payers’ Office in Agbobloshie, Robert Gbadegbe stated on the sidelines of a stakeholder sensitization workshop in Accra.

As part of reforms in revenue administration in Ghana, taxpayers have been classified as large, medium and small categories depending on their turnover and other criteria.

Medium taxpayers are those who have an annual turnover of between 90,000 and 5 million Ghana cedis.

The implementation of the new Income Tax Act, effective January 1, 2016, generated some concerns among stakeholders despite assurances it only sought to widen the tax base and consolidate the various income tax laws.

Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Medium Tax Payers’ Office in Agbobloshie Robert Gbadegbe said the filing rate in Agbobloshie is worrying.

The Ghana Revenue Authority through its 15 medium taxpayer offices across the country is working to curb tax evasion and encourage compliance.
