The minority caucus in Parliament have expressed fears that the recently inaugurated Komenda Sugar Factory is likely to become an unprofitable venture in no time.

But the NPP minority in parliament, accused government and its partners of failing to consider some important problems associated with the operation of the factory before commissioning it.

They mentioned factors such as the unavailability of sugarcane to feed the factory, unattractive prices for sugarcane produced by farmers and the high cost of irregular electrical power, which they believe may soon bring the factory to its knees.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament today [Thursday], Ranking Member for Trade and Industry and MP for Wenchi, Professor George Gyan Baffour, said the government's attitude of speeding such projects up did not allow for critical analysis to be done on the whole project before it was rolled out.

Most people have suggested that government rushed to inaugurate the Sugar factory for political gains ahead of the November 7 elections.

Key among such critics is entrepreneur and founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom who has questioned government’s decision to inaugurate the factory without the availability of the quantum of sugarcane, needed to efficiently run the facility.
