CEO of Ramel, Nunoo-Amarteyfio; the king of Ghana's Club 100

All these commitments to doing things differently are the very same things that have had a telling effect on the growth of the company. The biggest beneficiary has been the company's balance sheet, which increased from 300,000 to 10 million Ghana Cedis in the past four years. The awards are just the icing on the cake.

Sustaining the survival of a business is one thing, but pushing a business to grow at a rate of 1000 percent in 3 years is another. It is almost a miracle! But the story of Amartey Nunoo-Amarteyfio and his Ramel Interantional group is living manifestation that it is possible.

The Ghanaian business community was blown away by news that a relatively unknown wholly- Ghanaian services company had taken the number two slot on the highly competitive Ghana Club 100 rankings for 2014-2016  period.  It was simply unbelievable that Ramel International group had beaten almost all the big multinational banks, telcos, oil and gas companies, etc, except Tullow Oil Ghana to be adjudged the second most profitable company in the country.

" We feel very proud, its an honour to be part of this prestigious club of the top 100 companies in Ghana. Yes, we are completely Ghanaian -owned, and we are beating almost all the multinationals, that's a good feeling."  the CEO told Meet the Boss.

But what was more shocking, was that Ramel International group had risen 62 slots from their original 64th position on the last ranking, to the 2nd in the latest. We definitely had to get behind the story to find out what exactly this under-dog was getting right that almost everyone else seemed to be getting wrong, or was not doing much of.

So we set it up, and here is the story we came away with that will completely inspire you.

Amartey Amarteyfio, took over the reins of then Ramel Ghana Limited from his mother after her unfortunate demise in 2011, after she willed it  to her twin sister and himself, leading to his departure from a well paid job as a vice president of a bank in the United States to relocate back to Ghana to run the company.

" When I took over the company, all I wanted to do was to work hard. I did not Know that we will place so high in such a prestigious award and all the other accolades that have come our way. It was my hope to prove that Ghanaian companies can also stand toe to toe with the multinational companies and the Tullows of this world"

With a mindset to keep the legacy of his late mom intact and successful, he was poised to get the best out of the company, and propel to tremendous growth, which meant that he had to pool together the neccesary skills, human resource and innovation to beat his competitors and maximize customer service.

One of the first steps he took was to diversify the services the company was offering at the time.  When Amartey took over the company, it was mainly a conferences and events organizer. That was what the Ramel Ghana Limited was known for. He immediately decided to add other services like travel and tour services, office equipment and car rentals and later recruitment.

That will prove to be one of the singular most important decisions Amartey took that may have saved the life of his mother's company. With the benefit of hindsight, he realizes that that decision may have saved Ramel from collapse due to the Ebola outbreak that reduced the conferencing and leisure industry in the West African Region in 2014.

" Ramel is very big in the airline ticketing business, so we work with big blue chip companies like Samsung, Stanbic Bank, and other big multinationals. We also do recruiting and we have been responsible for hiring frontline staff for two of the major banks in the country. So if we had stuck with our primary service of conference management we will have been out of business by now."

Of course, it is clear that Amartey Nunoo-Amarteyfio and his Ramel International Group are providing services that are common. That is, they are not that exclusive in the services field. There are many other companies in their space, on the face of it. So why are they growing at such an astronomical pace.

" There is really no secret. It's just dedication, hardwork and consistency. Those hasve been my values growing up. I also think its the approach. We have a tremendous can -do spirit."

Ramel has topped all relevant charts or rankings in the services sector in the Country for 2015. Apart from rising 62 steps to the 2nd position on the Ghana Club 100, Ramel was adjuded top of the Services sub sector in Ghana on the Ghana Club 100.

As though that was not enough, news reaching  Pulse Business is the Association of Ghana industries just named  Ramel International Group, Services Company of the Year, in the AGI Industry Awards 2015.

Amartey feels this is true testimony of their commitment to hold up the standards in customer satisfaction, and innovation that ensures that they can predict what the customer needs before they even need them.

But above all, Amartey say the success is down to the immense appreciation to their human resource components- their employees. This is something most Ghanaian companies fail woefully at.

" We have focused on capacity building, and putting our employees first. Ghanaian businesses have still not realized that having their employees on their side is the biggest growth strategy  they  can have. We do not do the typical thing of waiting six months or a year to increase the salaries of our employees. We strictly tie remuneration of our employees to productivity such that they know that they come to work knowing that they can get a pay rise that day because they pushed the bottom-line, brought in a sale or brought in a client. No wonder we have grown so fast."

Amartey Nunoo- Amateyfio's target is to reach several hundreds of millions of Dollars in  the next five years. It appears he will achieve that with new technologies he is deploying like the    online flight and hotel booking app Kuruka.com.

" That forms a major part of our future as a company. It's my commitment to grow that part of the business to about a $100 million dollars in the next five years, and I'm convinced that we can achieve it."

Well,  now Ramel International Group is not a myth any more. It is clear now that the growth is not a figment of anyone's imagination, that the unbelievable growth rate is very much tangible.

They have also proven that with the right attitude, a very vibrant Ghanaian representation in the leagues of big businesses in the Ghanaian space is very much possible
