NCA responds to calls to ban internet calls

The authority also bemoaned the inability of these calls to be taxed, and regulated

Ghanaians are gradually resorting to the use of social media apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber, WeChat amongst others for voice calls instead of the normal telecommunication networks.

In a statement released by the NCA, the authority mentioned the numerous benefits of social media platforms to the average Ghanaian, but bemoaned the revenue loss caused by the use of these platforms for voice calls.

The authority also bemoaned the inability of these calls to be taxed, and regulated.

Meanwhile, CEO of MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Twum Asante, who initially made the call for the ban said “If you make a call through Whatsapp, though the call goes through, you are making the call through the internet medium, which means the operator is not getting money, and government is also deprived of its share in taxes.”

Mr. Asante also compared the phenomenon to Sim Boxing which is a fraudulent way of making calls without going through the revenue channels of the telecommunication companies.

“ For me the Over-the-top calls (Internet Calls) are even worse than Sim Boxing. Just as we are focusing on the Sim Boxing to reduce it, we must also apply that same level of serious to reduce Whatsapp calls, Viber calls etc.”

The NCA,  has however not made its stance clear on the matter yet.  The authority is engaging authorities in order to take a more informed decision on the matter.
