Tullow reduces gas supply to Ghana Gas

Ghana Gas has in turn reduced gas supply to the Volta River Authority to power the various thermal plants in the country.

Ghana Gas has in turn reduced gas supply to the Volta River Authority to power the various thermal plants in the country.

Tullow Ghana has reduced gas supply to the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) due to adverse weather conditions, Corporate Communications Manager of Ghana Gas, Alfred Ogbamey has said.

Ogbamey told Accra based OKAY FM that Tullow had informed Ghana Gas that "due to the challenges with the weather condition, gas supply had to be reduced till the end of the week so that they [Tullow] can be able to run operations there."

The supply cut over the weekend had led to the loss of 230 megawatts (MW) of power.

Explaining further, Obgamey said two weeks ago, Tullow supplied Ghana Gas with a maximum of 85 million standard cubic feet (scf-d) but as of yesterday (Sunday June 10), it was receiving just 46.7 scf-d.

"Because of that reduction, we have also reduced gas supply to VRA. We now give them 46 scf-d."

Effect on Power generation

Ogbamey said power generation will be affected by the latest development because some of the turbines will be dormant due to inadequate gas supply.

"There are some plants at Aboadze that runs only on gas, Ogbamey told OKAY FM. "For example all the AMERI plants or turbines run on gas."

He added that "there are some plants that also run on gas and light crude oil."

"The gas available cannot feed all the plants. Therefore some turbines will remain dormant till there is increase in supply," he added.
