Mobile subscribers ditch Airtel, others

The latest Industry Information Telecom Subscriptions Report by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the month of April saw Airtel lose as many as 70,042 subscribers.

Airtel’s voice subscribers decreased from 5,012,239 as at the end of March 2016 to 4,942,197 as at the end of April 2016, according to the NCA’s report.

This represents a percentage decrease of 1.40%, bringing its market share for the month under review to 13.58%.

Glo, which has struggled to make any significant impact in the sector since its launch in 2013, saw the heaviest drop in voice subscribers from 1,048,635 as at the end of March 2016 to 962,338 at the end of April 2016.

This reflects a percentage decrease of 8.23% for the month. Glo's total market share for the month under review was 2.64%.

Expresso, which is facing ownership challenges was the least performing in the sector.

Its voice subscriber figures decreased from 110,549 as at the end of March 2016 to 108,292 as at the end of April 2016.

This represents a percentage decrease of 2.04%, with a market share of  0.30%.

According to the data, at the end of April 2016, the total number of mobile voice subscribers had increased from 36,138,706 at the end of March 2016 to 36,395,116 as at the end of April 2016. This represents a percentage increase of 0.71%, bringing the total penetration rate for the month under review to 131.63%.

South African telecom giant MTN dominated the market with an increase in voice subscription from 17,004,445 in March to 17,192,543. This represents a percentage increase of 1.1 percent and a market share of 47.24%.

Vodafone maintained its second position for the month under review.

Vodafone’s mobile voice subscribers increased from 7,900,534 at the end of March 2016 to 7,976,348 as at the end of April 2016. This represents a percentage increase of 0.96%. Vodafone’s market share for April 2016 was 21.92%.

Tigo came in as the third largest telecom company with an increase in voice subscribers from 5,062,304 as at the end of March 2016 to 5,213,398 as at the end of April 2016.

This indicates a percentage increase of 2.98%. Their market share for the month under review was 14.32%.
