Telecoms in Ghana Ghanaians set to pay more for phone calls

Parliament on Wednesday approved the operations of Interconnect Clearinghouse Services in Ghana.

Telecommunications customers would soon have to pay more for voice calls with the introduction of Interconnect Clearinghouse Service charges on the pricing regime of telcos.

Parliament on Wednesday approved the operations of Interconnect Clearinghouse Services in Ghana.

This was after a set of regulations needed  to govern the operations of an Interconnect Clearinghouse was placed before the house by the National Communications Authority.

The Interconnect Clearinghouse independently measures the volume of calls transferred between telcos,  in order to aid the NCA and the Ghana Revenue Authority to ascertain monies and taxes payable by telcos.

Though the Interconnect Clearinghouse would immediately impose more cost on  the services of the telcos, the NCA has opted to bear the cost until January, 2018.

Mr. Tevie who was present at Parliament said, “The Authority will continue to undertake its regulatory functions with integrity and transparency to ensure quality provision of ICT regulatory interventions for the benefit of Ghanaians“, William Tevie told Parliament on Wednesday.

The LI 2234 regulates the activities of the service providers who connect and route traffic through an Interconnect Clearinghouse, as well as the legal framework through which Interconnect Clearinghouses would operate.

The NCA in 2015 contracted Afriwave Telecoms Ghana Limited to operate an Interconnect Clearinghouse amidst intense controversy over the bidding process.
