The Ghana Union of Traders Association are up in arms against president Mahama's decision to suspend efforts to rid the local retail sector of Nigerian traders.

The president declared on Monday, in the wake of the arrival of Nigerian president Mahamadou Buhari, that government will no longer continue in efforts to clamp-down on West African  retailers operating in the Ghanaian retail sector, predominantly Nigerians.

GUTA has been complaining for years now, about the influx of foreigners, especially West Africans in the Ghanaian retail space, which is crowding out Ghanaians and limiting the market size.

According to GUTA not only were retailers not allowed in the retail space of Ghanaians, they are supposed to come with minimal capital of $300,000 plus a Ghanaian partner, before they are allowed to operate under the Ghana Investment Promotion Corporation's Act.

President Mahama, has however revealed, that government will no longer pursue that course of action against Nigerian traders because the ECOWAS protocols give them  the right of movement, residence, and commercial activity along west African Countries, under the ECOWAS Intra-trade arrangements.

" I think that our continued persuit of regional integration has addressed the issues of our retail sector. The biometric ECOWAS card allows any West African citizen to live and work in any West African country of their choosing."

Meanwhile president of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, George Kwaku Ofori, says his outfit totally disagrees with the president's stance on the issue, and are dissappointed to say the least.

" We will pursue it to its logical conclusion. The GIPC Act has not been suspended, so for us, it cannot be superseded by the ECOWAS protocols."

When pulse.com.gh asked Mr. Ofori what his Association plans to do about government's decision, " We are a pressure group, and we will apply pressure on government which ever way possible, to rescind that decision."
