8 history-making tweets in Ghana over the last decade

Twitter turned ten years on Monday. The social network with it 140 character-limit post now has 320 million monthly active users. Here are some tweets that have marked the last decade.

Ten years after its launch, the social network is at the crossroads. Hashtags are everywhere, media, celebrities and government have mastered it... But it hardly entices new users.

With a little more than 300 million active members, it is far from Facebook and is competing with newcomers like Snapchat.

01. The first tweet

And impossible not to start with, is the very first tweet, sent March 21, 2006 by the site's founder, Jack Dorsey. He simply claimed to be setting up his "twttr".

02. The birth of the #hashtag

A little over a year after the birth of Twitter, a Google employee suggested using the pound sign (#) to aggregate the messages referring to the same subject.

The hashtag was born. However, it was many years before they become clickable...

03. Twitter becomes a source of 'news'

In January 2009, a plane crashed in the Hudson. Janis Krum, on a ferry with other rescuing survivors, tweeted the accident and posted a photo which was then be taken up by all the media.

Twitter takes a new dimension by becoming a source of information.

04. Tweet from space.

A few months later, Mike Massimino sent the first tweet from space.

05. The first Twitter engagement?

In November 2010, it was on Twitter that the 'engagement' was formalized between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

06. Four more years; a single tweet.

In 2012, with a photo where he hugs his wife Michelle, captioned with three words "Four more years" Barack Obama announced his re-election.

It became the most retweeted message from the network's history.

07. Degeneres, breaking records

A photo of a bunch of stars posted in March 2014 by the presenter Ellen DeGeneres, live from the Oscars, went around the world in minutes.

And it beat Obama's record to become the most retweeted tweet from the onset of the microblogging site: it was shared 3.3 million times!

08. Twitter fights - the Ghanaian version

And then came the trolls. Like this Ghanaian who tweeted this about Ghanaian musician, Jon Germain, who found it disturbing and responded in a rather 'harsh' manner.
