Government to restructure the Youth in Agriculture programme

Government has announced that it has begun the process of restructuring the Youth in Agriculture programme under the new Youth Employment Agency in order to boost the interest of young people in agriculture.

Addressing a gathering of chiefs and people of Ziope traditional area in the Agotime-Ziope district of the Volta region during their annual Agbleza, farming festival on Saturday, President Mahama said the restructuring process will ensure that young people are equipped with requisite skills and machinery to engage in large scale cultivation to meet high demands.

“We have reorganized the Youth Employment Agency which was previously called GYEEDA. We have sent a law to parliament and parliament has approved the law and so it is now a legitimate body that can carry out its objective in a proper manner. We are going to restart the Youth in Agriculture model, and the Youth in Agriculture model is supposed to recruit young people who are interested in agriculture and give them the right input, mechanization support in order that they can produce any food crops of their choice for the market in order to be able to earn an income to look after themselves and look after their families”, he said.

President Mahama further called on young people in that area to enroll in the new agriculture model and take advantage of the benefits that will accrue from the project.

The Youth in Agriculture Programme (YIAP) is a Government of Ghana (GOG) agricultural sector initiative with an objective of motivating the youth to accept and appreciate farming or food production as a commercial venture, thereby taking up farming as a life time vocation.
