Workers of Volta Star Textiles demonstrate over unpaid salaries

According to them, management has shown bad faith as it has defaulted in the payment of the salary arrears since December last year.

 

Workers of the Volta Star Textiles Limited at Juapong in the Volta region are demonstrating against management of the company for the nonpayment of salaries due them.

The workers threatened in October to demonstrate against their employers at the end of the month if their nine-months salary arrears are not paid.

Some of the workers say they walk several kilometers to work  everyday due to lack of money to pay for transportation.

Spokesperson of the aggrieved workers Esianyo Lord said their lives and the wellbeing of their family is being adversely affected by the situation.

“We have not been paid for 10 months and each time we threaten strike management will calm us down with a promise to settle its indebtedness”, he explained.

According to him, workers of the company have not received their back pay, yearly increments as well Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions which is currently in arrears of over 5 months.

He disclosed that plans by workers to embarked on strike last year were scuttled by the then Minister of Trade and Industry Haruna Iddrisu and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who promised to resolved the impasse.

“We have now run out of patience and will not kowtow to any pleas from any quarters until our grievances are met’ We have sealed the company and no one can work in it, he revealed.

Mr. Esianyo said the failure by management to pay their salaries had worsen their standard of leaving threatening workers of the company will not resume work until their demands are fully met.
